Ask a distributor which outdoor wall light caused the most after-sales headaches and you'll often hear the same story: the wrong light-source design for the wrong market. One design decision — a replaceable E27/E26 bulb versus a factory-sealed integrated LED array — shapes everything downstream, from spare parts to who buys it. Both designs have their buyers, and they're rarely the same ones. This guide compares the two so you can build a range that fits your market instead of guessing.
How the Two Designs Work
E27 and E26 are Edison screw sockets, 27 mm and 26 mm across — E27 being the everyday standard in 230V regions like Europe, the Middle East, and much of Asia, while E26 fits the 120V North American market. A fixture with an E27/E26 socket leaves the bulb choice to the buyer, and whoever owns it later can swap bulbs without touching the wiring.
An integrated LED fixture takes the opposite approach: the LED array and its driver are sealed inside the housing at the factory. There's no bulb to replace — light source and fixture are one unit.
The Case for Replaceable Bulbs
Socket-type fixtures hand the freedom to the end user. A homeowner can change brightness, color temperature, even bulb brand, without an electrician — and a failed bulb is a two-minute fix, not a work order. That convenience is the core selling point in markets where people already keep E27 bulbs in a kitchen drawer.
After-sales gets simpler too: a distributor stocks a small box of bulbs as spares instead of handling fixture returns, and installers like that the wiring stays untouched from one bulb change to the next.

The trade-off comes at end of life. When an integrated array finally dims after years of service, you replace the whole fixture, not one bulb. For most commercial projects, the long service life and the sealed rating outweigh that — but it's a conversation worth having with the buyer before they sign.
Matching the Design to Your Market
In retrofit-heavy markets where bulb habits run deep, socket-type fixtures tend to sell themselves, especially to homeowners. New-build hotels and commercial developments usually go the other way and specify integrated LED for its sealed rating and consistent color.
Climate tips the balance too. Out in the open or near the coast, the IP65 integrated designs fit the weather; under a covered porch or pergola, IP54 socket models give people the convenience they expect.
A useful rule of thumb from the specification side: choose the light source by who will maintain the fixture. If the homeowner maintains it, the socket wins on serviceability; if a facility team maintains it, the sealed LED wins on uptime.
